Using Your Abilities

The apostle Paul said, “By by the grace of God I am what I am.” Some take that to mean people must accept them for what God made them to be. Question is, what did God make you to be? He made you in His image to fear Him and keep His commandments (Genesis 1.26; Ecclesiastes 12.13).

Therefore, our duty is to use the abilities God has given us to glorify Him (1 Corinthians 10.31). Putting those talents to work is one of the most satisfying things you can do. As you do what God created you to do, you gain a great sense of purpose and grow closer and more grateful to the One who gave those talents to you. It is now up to you to take what you have been given and do the best you can with it.

Knowing you have ability is not as much a problem for some as it is knowing how to use it honorably. People who teach, rule, show compassion, or have wealth well may not know how it can be used for God.

First of all, open your eyes to what surrounds you. People and circumstances are opportunities for you to do something with the talents you have. It is not always someone else’s job as much as it is MY job.

Second, pray for an open door (Colossians 4.3). As God to give you an occasion to humbly use your ability for His service.

Third, study the scriptures. See where you can use your abilities. Do not hold them just for public display. Use them in secret. Use them where God can see. Let Him see what He has done for you.
