Throwbacks

Have you noticed how some professional sports are using “throwback” jerseys? They resemble past uniforms worn by the team years ago. The team often wears the jerseys for a limited time as a tribute to an anniversary of their team’s existence. It is a novel idea, but it does not last long. People are accustomed to the current style uniforms. A “retro” uniform may look like something from “ancient history”, especially for those who never lived during the time those uniforms were first worn.

Can you bring something “primitive” religiously into a modern culture and it be received, believed, and obeyed? Some people do not believe it can happen, because the cultural landscape of America has changed. Society has changed. Times have changed. That explains why there are so many different translations of the Bible. Man is often introduced to a new translation which “relates to modern man”. WHY? The reason is obvious. People believe the authority of God needs revision.

People do not believe a first century teaching authorized by God and taught by inspired apostles is valid in a twenty-first century world. Why not? It is because people aim to please themselves and not please God. Friend, we need the authority of the apostles read, studied, respected and followed. Without the apostolic authority, the purity of the church cannot be had or maintained. There is nothing “primitive”, “ancient”, or “out-dated” about the endeavor to go back and seek what Christians did in the Bible in the first century. The most powerful message in the religious marketplace today is building a New Testament church grounded in the scriptures and committed to obedience. It is necessary. It is imperative.
