The Call of the World

“O listen to our wondrous story!” That is not only the call of God, His apostles, or the angels, it is the call of the world. The world calls us to yield to our greatest desires. As old timers once said, “Whatever’s in the well will come up in the bucket sooner or later.” But as one of the inspired men of God said, “Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23).

Satan is endlessly calling us with his creative enticements. He makes it hard to purge our hearts of the old desires. We often find ourselves like Israel on their way to Canaan. They were heard to frequently say, “Let us return to Egypt.” Acts 7:39 says, “And in their hearts they turned back to Egypt.” Israel helps us see that in order to remove ourselves from the desires of Satan we must first free ourselves from murmuring and complaining about God.

We need to desire God singlemindedly, and wholeheartedly. We cannot “love” god in name and heed the call of the world. Most of us would say that we would like to be something other than a “worldly” person. Depending upon what we desire, there may be more of “Egypt” left in us than we think.
